Claire Collins, who works in healthcare and is pursuing her Master's in Analytics, wants to transition into healthcare data science. To achieve this, Claire is working on her analytics skills, starting with SQL. This is her story.

Claire’s Story — The Data Analyst on a Journey to become a Data Scientist

1. How did you get started with learning SQL?

To get my Master's in Analytics, I needed to sharpen my analytics skills, especially in SQL. I wanted to learn from a resource that had a lot of interactive quizzes, but I soon realized most platforms didn’t start from the basics. I needed something that explained SQL from the ground up and that’s how I discovered Programiz PRO. It stood out to me as a great beginner-friendly platform.

2. How has your experience with coding been?

While using multiple platforms, I discovered that the experience varies greatly from platform to platform.

I found that mostly everyone just assumes you know certain things. They didn't start at the beginning when learning SQL. And what happened to me was, I started watching YouTube videos. But, it's not a concise process, and if you're learning something new, it's easy to get overwhelmed.

Many courses were either not interactive or too advanced – you couldn't figure out where you went wrong. Even if they gave solutions to the coding problems, it was complicated and obscure, like someone trying to impress you with their programming skills.

Every platform's method of teaching programming and what they assume learners already know is different. So, I had vastly different learning experiences in different platforms. Programiz PRO, I found, was the one that worked the best for me.

Programiz PRO has a good experience setup – it was better interaction and clear formatting. What I mean by that is that: you give one or two basic examples, and then I could try it. And then you showed the answer so I was able to see where I went wrong. You guys have a straightforward, clear-cut approach compared to other courses I found.

I really liked that you guys had everything written out where you could re-read it and take notes if you wanted to, versus some platforms that had video formats.

3. How was your experience with Programiz PRO?

I really enjoyed it. You guys do a great job with the formatting. It's more clear-cut and easier to understand than some of the other courses.

I'd rather have a course, nicely packaged like Programiz PRO, where they say, "Okay, this is the beginning. This is what you have to understand first, here's an example, and here you try the example." And then you go through and figure out if you did it correctly. I really liked that in addition to the interactive quizzes, you had challenges where you could find your errors and check your work against the right answer.

I like that format. Everyone does a good job when you have to try it out – hands-on learning. I prefer that style of learning. So, I enjoyed that aspect of Programiz PRO compared to other courses.

One other thing I really liked is the clear-cut format of the course outline, it shows you exactly what you are about to go through and what you have already been through. So, it breaks everything down into chapters and everything within the chapter underneath.

Within the chapters, you have a beginning summary and an ending summary that ties the whole thing together. You know, you didn't have to fast-forward through anything. That was, to me, very approachable and made the whole experience straightforward.

4. How has learning to code with Programiz PRO impacted you?

Actually, it's kind of a significant impact because when you start learning SQL or any course, it can be overwhelming. So, to find a course that doesn't overwhelm you when you're learning something new like this is significant. Because it was clear-cut, it encouraged me to keep going and keep learning. Its straightforwardness made it feel achievable to me.

5. Who do you think would benefit from Programiz PRO?

I think other data analysts would benefit from this; people who are starting in the data analysis world. You guys may be gearing more towards computer programming, but actually, data analysis and data science have a lot of overlap with computer programming. I think you guys would attract a lot of data analysts because most analysts have to learn Python, SQL, R, and Tableau. And you guys have Python and SQL. So, I would recommend Programiz PRO to analysts.

6. What has changed the most for you since using Programiz PRO?

Right now I'm a Data Analyst, but a step up from that would be a Data Scientist. Because of Programiz PRO, I could learn the basics of SQL, which helped me with the prerequisite classes for my master's program. Getting into this master's program will allow me to get further into my career as a Data Scientist. So, Programiz PRO has boosted my career.
